““Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!”
Luke 12:27–28, NIV
Jesus gave this series of teachings in Luke Chapter 12 on his way to Jerusalem. We can imagine that he passed meadows of wildflowers on his way. He may have referred to the scene as he elaborated on his admonition not to worry but to trust in God’s provision.
Jesus compares the beauty of the field dressed in lush foliage to the attire of Solomon, the richly adorned king. The flowers grow, rich and lush, without working to be beautiful. Instead, they are clothed by God who keeps them and preserves their beauty. Even with their beauty, they are eventually thrown into the fire after their season is over. They are no more. Yet, God kept them until the appointed time.
Again, Jesus argues from the lesser to the greater. If lowly flowers that will one day be useless and thrown in the fire are cared for by God, how much more will God care for you and me, his people?
God will clothe you in more than physical clothing. It is his will that you be clothed in the righteousness of Christ as you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Do we have little faith? Let us avoid the temptation to lose our trust in God and his provision for us.
Lord, Give me more faith in you and your promises and provision. Help me understand how much you love all of your creation, especially me. Help me to trust in you for everything I need. I praise you for being the one who rules the universe yet takes the time to look on me and my needs. Thank you, Lord for all that you have done and continue to do for me. Amen.
